Summary

In Europe Beating Cancer Plan, the Commission announced several initiatives to fight cancer in the EU. The measures were grouped under prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment and quality of life of cancer survivors.

In the field of prevention, on 31 January the Commission will adopt a "Prevention package" which includes a revision of the Council recommendation on smoke free environments of 2009 and a Council recommendation on vaccine preventable cancer.

The Council Recommendation on Smoke- Free Environments will be updated by both extending its coverage to emerging products, such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, and expanding smoke-free environments, including outdoor spaces.

The Council recommendation on vaccine preventable diseases aims to address cancer risks associated with Hepatitis B and Human papilloma virus infections.
