Statement by the President of the European Economic and Social Committee on Recent Developments in Türkiye

The European Economic and Social Committee expresses deep concern over the recent imprisonment of opposition leader Ekrem İmamoğlu. This development raises serious questions about the state of democratic governance, the rule of law, and respect for fundamental freedoms in Türkiye.

The EESC already raised its concerns last year about rule of law and human rights situation in Türkiye. As a candidate country for EU membership, Türkiye is expected to uphold the rule of law and fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, association, and assembly, as well as ensuring judicial independence and media freedom. The EESC calls on Turkish authorities to honor these commitments and refrain from actions that undermine democratic values.
