Statement on the attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico

I am deeply shocked and appalled by the brutal attack on Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, following the government's meeting in the town of Handlova.

I condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms. Violence is unacceptable and has no place in the EU. An attack on an elected politician is an attack on our democratic values. It is deeply concerning that we are witnessing an increasing number of threats against political figures in the EU. It is imperative that we remain united in our fight against hate.

The EESC will discuss the matter during its next Plenary session on 31 May as part of the debate "No place for hate: a Europe united against hatred".

My thoughts are with Prime Minister Fico, his family and the citizens of Slovakia.
