The EU's contribution to the second UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) Stocktaking Moment

Scope and objectives

On 31 march 2025, the EESC will host an online public hearing, in collaboration with FAO and in the context of the EESC Permanent Group on Sustainable Food Systems.

This event will gather representatives from the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, the European Commission, and from civil society organisations  to explore the state of progress of the EU on the path to more sustainable, fairer and inclusive food systems, following the new actions agreed upon during the UN Food System summit in 2021 and the recent publication of the EC vision on agriculture and food. It will also provide a discussion forum on how the UNFSS mobilizes support and connects with other actors, on the role of the EU leadership in this global context and on leverages from the Vision on Agriculture and Food to support the Coalitions for Actions in the transformation of food systems.

This event will be webstreamed live on our website, the interpretation provided is: FR EN ES.

Background

The UN convened a Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) in 2021 with the aim to launch bold new actions to transform the way the world produces and consumes food, delivering progress on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a follow-up of this high-level summit, the UN Secretary-General has committed to convene a global stocktaking meeting every two years to review progress in implementing the outcomes of this process and its contributions to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.

The second Stocktaking moment takes place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 27-29 July 2025. It will provide an opportunity to document progress, strengthen accountability, and unlock investments for transformative action. The event will spotlight successful country-level transformations, highlight innovative practices, and address challenges faced in fragile and conflict-affected settings, and be part of broader efforts to shape a coherent global narrative on sustainable development and accelerate synergies between key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) transition. This first Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS +2) took place in Rome from 24 till 26 July 2023. The EESC contributed to this first stocktaking through an event and written contribution.
