Liaison Group Newsletter October 2024
The autumn following the EU elections remains an exciting yet uncertain period for most of us. As we approach the European Parliament hearings for the designated College of Commissioners, many are still wondering what the new legislative mandate will bring. It is reassuring to see a commitment to strengthening civil society, the civic space, the protection of the rule of law, and European democracy — all promises that we hope will be delivered on during this term of office. Civil society will certainly play a key role in holding the College accountable.
While Europe continues to shape and distribute its powers, whether through political appointments or financial instruments, we at the EESC, and particularly at the Liaison Group (LG), have been preparing for the future. On 11 December, we will be celebrating two decades of dialogue, as we mark the 20th anniversary of the Liaison Group with European civil society organisations and networks. We look forward to seeing many of the founding members, as well as current and new members, at this special occasion. During our Liaison Group meeting in December, we will also have the opportunity to discuss the need for a European Civil Society Strategy with special focus on the Civil Society Platform announced in the mission letter of Commissioner designate Mc Grath, on which the EESC LG Dialogue Cycle group has been reflecting on.
We also hope to unveil more details about the upcoming EESC Civil Society Week 2025, with sessions to be organised by LG members. In the meantime, please save the dates: 17-20 March; the focus will be on Strengthening cohesion and participation in polarised societies.
We hope to see many of you at the full meeting in December!
