Letter of solidarity from the EESC Workers' Group – Greek National Strike 17 April 2024

To: Yannis Panagopoulos, GSEE

Brussels, 16 April 2024

Dear President, dear Yannis,

On behalf of the Workers' Group, I want to express our full support and solidarity on the occasion of your national strike taking place on 17 April, to demand improved living and working conditions to address the "decent living crisis".

For many years Greek workers have paid the unfair cost of erroneous policies leading to crises which were not of their making. With the current cost of living crisis and huge price hikes, Greek households – notably the most vulnerable such as low-paid workers and pensioners – are again bearing the brunt. It is indeed shocking that in 2023, the purchasing power of minimum wage workers only reached 2015 levels. People continue to suffer and it is high time that the Government listened to trade union demands including.

Please be assured that the Workers' Group stands with the General Confederation of Labour and Greek citizens in your determination to achieve a better standard of living and working conditions for workers, their families and the most vulnerable people.

In solidarity,

Lucie Studnicná
President of the EESC Workers´ Group
