Statement on Europe Day

Today, on Europe Day, we celebrate the peace, unity, and shared values that bind our continent together. It is a moment to reflect on the achievements of the European project—how far we’ve come in strengthening democracy, human rights, and cooperation across borders.

But this year, as we mark this occasion, we cannot ignore the grave challenges facing our neighbourhood and the world.

Russia’s brutal war of aggression against Ukraine continues to threaten not only the sovereignty of a democratic country, but also the principles of peace and international law. We reaffirm our unwavering support for the Ukrainian people, for civil society in Ukraine, and for their right to a just and sustainable peace.

In the Middle East, we urgently call for an immediate ceasefire, an end to the suffering of civilians, and the unconditional release of all hostages. Respect for international humanitarian law must be upheld without exception.

At the same time, we are reminded that the European Union remains a beacon of hope and solidarity. The strong desire of many neighbouring countries to join the EU speaks to the strength of our democratic model and to the promise it holds. The EESC is fully committed to supporting the accession process—through vibrant civil society, meaningful social dialogue, and the rule of law. This is the legacy of the Schuman Declaration, and of Europe Day itself.

Yet enlargement also means reform. We must make the EU fit for the future—more democratic, more transparent, and more capable of acting together.

We must never lose sight of what makes Europe strong from within: social justice. It is not optional—it is fundamental. Fair wages, decent work, social protection, and equal opportunities must remain at the heart of our Union. As Eurostat data remind us, over 95 million people in the EU were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2023. Tackling this is not just an economic imperative, it is a moral one.

On this Europe Day, let us recommit to a Union that protects, empowers, and unites all its people.

Happy Europe Day!
