  • The hearing will gather stakeholders from civil society and institutions to look into the various forms of violence against women and girls that are not covered by 2024 Directive on gender violence. The objective will be to provide a perspective that truly contemplates a common comprehensive policy against gender-based violence, offering a comprehensive and effective strategy against this violation of human rights within the framework of the Union. Reflexions will feed into an Own-Initiative Opinion by the EESC FRRL Group.

  • The Section for Economic and Monetary Union and Economic and Social Cohesion (ECO) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is working on an own-initiative opinion on 'An EU investment fund for economic resilience and sustainable competitiveness' with the aim to develop a common narrative on the financing needs for the green transition and sketch out central elements of an EU investments fund that could allow EU Member States to more effectively address the financial needs of the Green Deal.

In the context of the work on this opinion, the ECO section decided to organise a public hearing bringing together experts from organised civil society and decision-makers. The aim of the public hearing is two-fold: on the one hand, to discuss the draft EESC opinion, and on the other hand, to collect further views and ideas to expand and refine the EESC's draft recommendations.

  • The way forward

The EESC is organising this public hearing to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the legislative framework on securitisation, as well as risks related to securitisation and possible policy solutions.

  • Proposals for the next parliamentary term

The Capital Markets Union (CMU) is an initiative that was launched in 2014 as a plan envisaged at creating a single market for capital in the EU. The CMU Action Plans of 2015 and 2020 contained a number of measures to deliver on that objective. Despite these efforts, the CMU remains incomplete. In March 2024, the Eurogroup in inclusive format adopted a statement on the future of the CMU. In April 2024, Enrico Letta, in his report "Much more than a market" proposed the creation of a Savings and Investments Union upon the incomplete CMU. Public debate From a Capital Markets Union to a  Savings and Investments Union organised in the framework of the ECO section meeting gathers the representatives from the institutional sector, as well as stakeholders from the civil society to discuss on the abovementioned matters.

  • The European Economic and Social Committee is holding the fourth edition of its conference on energy poverty on 26 June in Brussels.

  • A few days after the European Parliament elections, in a new political and institutional environment, the EESC is organising in cooperation with the Central Council of the Economy (CCE) and the National Labour Council (CNT) of Belgium a joint Seminar on: 'Transitions towards a digital, green, just and competitive Europe: the role of social and civil dialogue.' This seminar will be held on 20 June 2024 and be open to the public.

Faced with a range of critical external and internal challenges, the EU has embarked on a new sustainable growth strategy. The seminar will take stock of the obstacles to a transition towards a competitive, just and low-carbon economy. It will also give voice to a variety of actors of social and civil dialogue in the EU, representatives of EU and national institutions, academia and research institutes to assess how they could - in a joint effort - support the implementation of public policies, and particularly the twin transition, through the establishment of genuine social and civil dialogue.

  • Hearing of the Fundamental rights and Rule of law Group

This hearing will examine the current state of prisons and detention centers in Europe, focusing on the experiences of inmates, detainees, and the working staff. The event will review existing regulations for these facilities and assess their practical implementation, to determine whether they uphold human rights standards adequately. Thanks to the participation of relevant stakeholders, the hearing seeks to identify gaps and challenges in the system, by comparing the laws with on-the-ground realities.

  • The 2024 annual meeting of presidents and secretaries-general of the ESCs of the EU & the EESC will be held on 19 June 2024.
